Cap participates in Princeton’s eating club membership process. Prospective members can explore the club during Street Week and learn more about current membership procedures through the Interclub Council.
Every member on Princeton University financial aid receives a grant from the Cap and Gown Financial Aid Fund, and a member on full financial aid pays no out-of-pocket costs for club membership. There is no separate application: eligibility follows from the University’s own aid decision.
Every member who receives any financial aid from Princeton. Members not on University aid who receive aid from elsewhere, such as a government grant from their home country, are eligible too, provided they meet criteria consistent with the University Financial Aid Office’s.
The difference between the University’s upperclass board rate, including the additional board grant Princeton gives upperclassmen on aid, and Cap’s house-and-board charges. On full aid, that difference is covered in full.
The policy is transparent by design. As soon as the University publishes its board rate for the year, a member on aid knows the value of their grant. The Board of Trustees is committed to keeping membership fees as affordable as possible.
The Board of Trustees adopted it unanimously in December 2020, replacing a year-by-year application with a guarantee. The fund was seeded in part by the Classes of 2020 and 2021, who gave a large share of their spring 2020 board rebates to start it, and it is sustained by gifts from the Cap and Gown community.
